Greater Manchester school leavers are being encouraged to consider applying for apprenticeships before they receive their exam results this summer. We're advising young people considering an apprenticeship not to wait to apply, as many employers will be posting their apprentice vacancies in the coming weeks.
Jayne Worthington, Managing Director of The Skills Company said: “If you’re interested in starting an apprenticeship, we would advise you to apply now and not delay. We’ve got over 200 vacancies available right now with employers across Greater Manchester, and if young people wait until after they’ve got their GCSE or A Level results, then some of the best apprenticeship opportunities may have been taken.”
“The vacancies cover a huge variety of occupations, ranging from apprentice insurance brokers to refrigeration engineers, and from social media and digital marketers to apprentice quantity surveyors. Young people who take these opportunities will get a great grounding in their chosen career, gaining nationally recognised qualifications, and earning a wage while they learn.”
After completing his A Levels, Alex Pierpoint from North Manchester decided to look for an apprenticeship in an industry that interested him, and get professional development on the job, rather than in an academic setting.
Alex applied successfully for an apprenticeship in Providing Financial Services with Nationwide, the world’s largest building society. Alex said: “I valued the opportunity to work in a range of teams on a variety of projects. My line managers have all kept an eye out for development opportunities and given me the chance to work with different teams and in different locations to widen my experience.”
“Having completed my apprenticeship, I’m now studying for the Level 4 Professional Certificate in Banking through the Institute of Financial Services and would like to continue this up to Level 6. In the longer term I want to complete higher level qualifications and continue to progress within Nationwide.”
“I think the apprenticeship is a real opportunity to gain valuable work experience with the flexibility to move into different teams and work on different projects. Being part of the apprenticeship scheme meant that I was exposed to a number of learning opportunities and I received plenty of support from The Skills Company as well as my colleagues at Nationwide.”
