The Traineeship was designed by experts from the BBC Academy, drawing on the BBC’s existing training courses in digital, leadership and personal development.  Recruits to the Traineeship programme, which includes a three week work placement, cover a range of essential work skills including:

  •          Improving employability
  •          How to help a business to attract more customers online
  •          Building and maintaining a basic web page for a business
  •          Developing a basic social media campaign
  •          How to create an online CV

Skills Company sector experts have also been sharing their knowledge about employment opportunities in various sectors with the trainees, in group presentations and one to one sessions.

22 year old Scott Harding from Macclesfield had worked in retail and accounts work, but had been unemployed and claiming Jobseekers Allowance for some time before being referred to the course by his Jobcentre Plus Advisor.  Scott said:

“I’m enjoying the course so far.  We’ve been doing employability work in the mornings, and concentrating more on digital skills in the afternoons.  I’ve applied for lots of jobs in the past but haven’t often got to the interview stage, so I’m hoping the course will help me to sell myself better so that I can get more interviews and convince employers that I’m worth taking on.”

“Ideally, I’d like a job in IT Support, preferably in a school or college, and I’m hoping that this course will help to prepare me for that.”

Brooke Lever from Ordsall in Salford had previously worked in hospitality, but was also unemployed and was referred to the course by Jobcentre Plus.  Brooke said:

“The course has been really helpful so far in explaining what kind of things employers are looking for when they are recruiting.  The interaction within the group has been great and I’m learning a lot about how businesses use social media.  I’m interested in fashion design and web design, and I’d like to use the experience I get on this programme to get a job that will help me develop those interests.”
