Sarah Peace left school with very few GCSEs and decided to pursue a career in hairdressing from the age of 16. She undertook her level 2 with Saks Training Academy in her home town of Nottingham, before moving to Manchester five years ago. On arrival in Manchester, Sarah decided to take advantage of a then Government scheme, allowing those over the age of 26 to pursue a Level 3 qualification for the first time, as the Level 3 wasn’t available through the Saks Training Academy. Sarah was also keen to learn another way, as all of her previous training had been delivered the ‘Saks way.’

After seeing an advertisement, Sarah applied and began her Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship with The Skills Company. Here she learnt new techniques, such as how to apply hair extensions and was also taken back to the basics of the hair structure. Sarah found her training with The Skills Company really beneficial, commenting that the return to basics was “a useful reminder of how things are done.”

On successful completion of the Level 3 qualification, Sarah began working at Too Funky Hair, Manchester Deansgate, a stylish city centre salon with over 15 members of staff. Now, with over 14 years in the industry, Sarah is a fully qualified senior stylist, a certified Redken colourist and an educator for ‘Sexy Hair’, an American product company which hopes to be in 59 countries by the end of 2016, having been founded in 1998.

Also specialising in advanced cutting, wedding hair and hair ups, a typical day for Sarah includes cutting, colouring, re-styles, hair ups and educating. In the future, Sarah would like to pursue the educating paths available within the hairdressing industry further, as she feels that constantly raising her own knowledge on hairdressing techniques and products not only helps her clients, but also keeps her at the forefront of the industry.

Speaking about her time with The Skills Company, Sarah said: “Claudia, my tutor was great. She had lots of energy and enthusiasm, which you need when you are teaching people. If I didn’t understand something, she went over it with me until I did. She was fantastic!” Sarah would also recommend pursuing the Level 3 to current stylists but advises that “they have got to be ready to do it, as it is tougher than the Level 2 but the outcomes are very rewarding.”
