Elfin Brook from Manchester works as a Disability Fitness Co-ordinator for Calderdale Council’s Children’s Services. Elfin’s ambition was to go to university to study Podiatry, but he didn’t have the required qualifications. He heard about the Skills Company’s Access to Higher Education courses while studying with another provider, and successfully applied to join the Access to Nursing and Midwifery Diploma course in 2014.

The course offers a full level 3 qualification and covers:

• Professional Healthcare Practice
• Human Physiology
• Higher Education Study Skills
• Optional Specialist Units

Most of the teaching on the course consists of lectures, small group work and one to one tutorials. Learners’ progress on Access programmes is measured in different ways, and assessment is designed to prepare students for the types of assessment commonly used in Higher Education. Elfin graduated successfully from the course in the summer of 2015.

Elfin said:

“I found the Professional Healthcare Practice part of the course to be the most useful. This is a key subject area, so being taught by our tutor Laura, who has an intrinsic understanding of the field due to her experience, really benefited the group. She was able to communicate her knowledge to the whole group and on the whole, I felt really enthused with the subjects covered.”

“I thought the facilities at Churchgate House were brilliant. Everything was totally accessible, and it was really useful to be able to purchase food and drink on site. The level of personal support I received from Laura was exceptional, and without her, I wouldn’t have been able to complete the course. I’ve now been accepted to study Podiatry at the University of Salford, and I start in September. I would certainly recommend this access course, particularly to mature students or those with family responsibilities.”
