Wasif Ramtoola from Higher Broughton in Salford studied for his A Levels at school, but didn’t do as well as he’d hoped.  He still had ambitions to go to university, but needed to achieve the entry requirements.  Wasif looked on the internet for access to higher education courses and came across The Skills Company’s range of courses.

Wasif applied to join the Access to Higher Education Diploma in Business course and started in 2014.  The course aims to improve the academic, vocational and personal skills of its students, and to prepare them for the world of higher education.   Successful candidates are awarded a nationally recognised Access to HE Diploma by the awarding body Ascentis.

The Diploma is approved by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) and is accepted for entry to a wide range of universities and higher education institutions.  There are no formal entry requirements for the course but candidates must have a genuine interest in business and be motivated and enthusiastic.

The course is delivered in three sessions a week, and Wasif was able to fit it in with his part-time job as an Administrator at the ITC Centre, a private training college in Cheetham Hill, Manchester.  Wasif completed the course successfully in the summer of 2015 and has been accepted to study for a BSc in Business and IT at the University of Manchester.

 Wasif said:

“The course was very good, it was a good mix of group work and personal study.  The tutors were great, and very supportive if we needed any help.  I’m really glad that I did the course, as I didn’t want to have to repeat my whole A level course.  After my degree, I’d like to work in e-commerce and eventually have my own business.  I would definitely recommend the course to others who need to get the qualifications they need to get into university.”
