20 year old Katie Turnbull left school with an impressive 13 GCSEs grades A*-C, 2 A-levels at grade A and a further A-level at grade C. Like many students with clear academic ability, Katie was encouraged to follow the UCAS process and received offers from all six of the universities she applied to. However, Katie knew she wanted to follow a more practical route, finding the idea of university study somewhat unappealing.

After successfully completing his GCSEs, Daniel Ord from Lees in Oldham embarked on an A Level course at college. However, after a year, he decided that full time academic study wasn’t for him. 18 year old Daniel had always been interested in engineering, and decided to look for an opportunity to get practical experience as well as getting qualified. He researched a number of courses at local colleges and training providers, and eventually successfully applied to join the Engineering Pre- Apprenticeship course run by The Skills Company in partnership with Tameside College.

Kathryn Keightley from St Helens attended The Sutton Academy in St Helens. At school Kathryn achieved a number of GCSE qualifications, but felt she could have done better in some subjects. On leaving school, Kathryn initially applied to St Helens College but then decided that this was not the right learning environment for her to be in. In September 2013, Kathryn applied to The Skills Company as she felt a smaller and more personal environment at the St Helens training centre would better suit her needs.
