Apprenticeships - A guide for parents

What is an Apprenticeship?

An Apprenticeship is a real job, during which young people are paid and work towards a nationally recognised qualification. Apprentices mostly learn on the job and when they attend their off the job training, they gain a deeper understanding of the theory and technical knowledge which underpins their chosen career.

What is a Pre-Apprenticeship?

Our Pre-Apprenticeships are education and training programmes focused on providing young people leaving school with the skills that employers are looking for. To gain an Apprenticeship in many industries, employers require the individual to already have a level 2 qualification in that sector.

Our fast track Pre-Apprenticeship programmes allow young people to gain their level 2 faster than they could on a typical college course. During their time on the Pre-Apprenticeship, we work with our extensive network of employers to try and find the right Apprenticeship vacancy for each young person to begin at the end of their Pre-Apprenticeship.

At The Skills Company, we are a not-for-profit organisation, part of the Manchester Growth Company, with a successful track record of delivering Apprenticeships stretching over 25 years. Every year we place thousands of young people into jobs and have over 300 live vacancies at any one time. To see our full list of currently available Apprenticeship vacancies, click here
